In all of Missouri, there are no cities bigger than Kansas City, which has a sister city, Kansas City, Kansas, just across the river.  Kansas City Missouri, though, is definitely the bigger of the two.  In fact, it’s so large that it’s in four counties, Clay, Jackson, Cass and Platte and everybody knows that Kansas City hotels are the best in the area. The city technically encompasses about 318 square miles.  It also has a huge population.  According to a census taken in February of 2009, it has a population of 475,830.  Although, the entire metropolitan area was estimated at over two million people.

European Visit Leads To Accurate Mapping:

when the first documented Europeans visited Kansas City, it caused a very interesting chain of events to start.   Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont came to the area and explored the Missouri River.  He was trying to hid from French authorities at the time because they didn’t like his actions when Fort Detroit was attacked by Native Americans.  Bourgmont and his wife, a Native American, lived near Brunswick, Missouri, where Bourgmont made a living illegally trading in furs.

Bourgmont really wanted to clear his name.  So, to do that, he wrote several papers.  One was called “Exact Description of Louisiana, of Its Harbors, Lands and Rivers, and Names of the Indian Tribes That Occupy It, and the Commerce and Advantages to Be Derived Therefrom for the Establishment of a Colony” and the other was called “The Route to Be Taken to Ascend the Missouri River.  Those were written in 1713 and 1714, respectively, and they were instrumental in helping Guillaume Delisle, a French cartographer who was making the first accurate map of the area
